ESTATE PLANNING FOR SINGLES

You are your estate

Nearly half of U.S. adults are single according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s 117.6 million unmarried Americans – nearly every other adult aged 18 and over. If you are single, you are in good company!

Regardless of your age, estate planning is essential.  Even if you don't have any assets, you are your estate. If you don't legally appoint a decision-maker in advance through proper estate planning and you become legally incapacitated due to a serious injury or illness, a judge will select a decision-maker for you. At least three strangers will become involved in your personal affairs, and the law will be applied to you in the same way it would be applied to any other John or Jane Doe in your situation.

Without proper estate planning, your assets may be distributed after death based on "one-size-fits-all" state laws, which may not reflect your unique circumstances and objectives for your loved ones and assets.
